The Wright Family Grows By 2 Feet

August 28, 2005

It all began on Christmas Eve 2004. Kristin had been feeling a little "under the weather," for a few days. As we were getting ready for a Christmas Eve Service, without telling me, she decided to see if she was pregnant. Wondering what could be wrong, I ran up the stairs when I heard her scream, "Paul come here". I had no idea that my life was about to change forever. God had answered our prayers. Nine months later, here we are, with our beautiful baby boy!.

On Saturday morning, August 27, Kristin began to feel contractions and thought her water might have broken. Thinking we were just paranoid first time parents, we ignored the other signs as the contractions subsided at about 7:00 in the morning. After a few more hours of irregular contractions, we decided to call our birthing class instructor to see what she thought. Bev, and our friend Tiff, both agreed we should call Dr. Falkner, who told us to head to the hospital so she could see if her membranes had indeed ruptured.

We both felt bad calling Dr. Falkner in on a Saturday, still not believing we were actually in labor. But sure enough, when she ran the test, Kristin's water had broken and we were on our way to having Baby Alex. Immediately, we started making calls letting everyone know that we were at the hospital to stay. The lobby was full of family and friends who waited all night for Alex's arrival.

Both of our moms were in the delivery room trying to help out in any way they could and on some occassions helping a little too much. When Kristin was pushing, the moms and I were pushing along with her, not taking breaths until the doctor and nurses finished counting to 10. Finally, at 4:25 AM on August 28, Alexander James Wright was born. Kristin had been pushing for around 3 1/2 hours.

Once Alex was born, he was whisked away to the respitory therapist, as he had swallowed a good bit of amniotic fluid. As I stood over and watched them clear his lungs and giving him oxygen, all I could do was pray as I waited for that hearty cry. Dr. Falkner and the nurses assured us this was normal when a child had swallowed some fluid, and that everything should be okay, but I worried until he was in the clear. After about an hour or so, they had finally stabilized Alex's breathing and Kris was allowed to hold him. Seeing her hold our son was just so incredibly amazing! Alex is now at home and doing much better. He has definitely caught up for the lack of crying that he did in the hospital. Mom, Dad and Alex are all doing well.
